Pittsburg State donates beds for Joplin tornado victims

Pittsburg State University is helping victims of the Joplin tornado get some much-needed sleep.

Wednesday morning more than 20 student athletes from the football, volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball teams delivered approximately 150 bed frames to the Hope Chest, a Joplin non-profit organization that provides supplies and support to tornado victims. The frames were set to be retired from dormitories that were recently renovated, said Chris Kelly, Pitt State’s associate vice president for university marketing and communication. He said it was a good way for the university to reach out to the community.

“We felt this was the perfect opportunity to help families in need,” Kelly said.

The beds were delivered by trucks provided by Pitt State and Via Christi Hospital.

Kathy Wilson, director of Helping Hands Housing Inc., which runs the Hope Chest, said the organization will receive a truck with new mattresses from a donating agency in California, which she plans to pair with the frames. The Joplin Family Worship Center is the distribution center for the beds.
