i have a coffee table that is wood with a glass top and i hate how loud it is when i put something on top of it and i'm paranoid to break it.
Acrylic is softer than glass so will produce a less brittle sound when stuff hits it. On the other hand, coasters and place mats were (at least partly) invented to deal with clunking and clanking. Of course, being softer, it is more likely to show scratches.

btw the glass on the nesting table i am looking at is tempered, much stronger, maybe that helps...
1] acrylic scratches more easily, but is less likely to break or shatter
2] glass is harder to scratch
3] both can be cleaned with glass cleaner
