Christine Collins is living my nightmare.
Her 6-year-old granddaughter, Arianna Gibson, was shot early Sunday morning while sleeping on the living room sofa. On Monday afternoon, police were questioning a 17-year-old about the shooting. The gunman also wounded two teens when he fired through a window from the bungalow’s porch.
Even in a community where the sound of shots fired is as familiar as the firecrackers on the 4th of July, this shooting was shocking. Englewood is a community of grandparents whose houses are filled with the children of children who grew up there .
And a grandmother’s house is supposed to be a safe haven, a place where a child always feels welcome. Collins was so devastated by her granddaughter’s death, she was barely coherent.
The tragedy mirrors the shooting that killed Tsarina Powell that occurred in the same community in 2000. The 12-year-old Tsarina was shot several times while trying to flee her bedroom as a shooter sprayed the house with an AK-47 assault weapon.
