Orleans Parish DA refuses rape charge against Voodoo fest ...
District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro on Wednesday formally refused a charge of simple rape against Stephen Rehage , 47, stemming from a woman's allegation that he slipped her a drug cocktail during a date in Lakeview a year ago.
The woman told police she woke up in Rehage's City Park Avenue home to find the former LSU football defensive back choking and raping her. Rehage acknowledged having sex with the woman, but claims she joined willingly, his attorney, Patrick Fanning, has said.
The Times-Picayune does not identify victims of alleged rapes.
Cannizzaro refused the charge two months after shifting gears and sending the case to a grand jury , which heard evidence in the case but never returned an indictment.
"We're happy to have it over with," said Fanning, who declined to discuss the case further.
Rehage did not immediately return a call to his office Thursday.
Cannizaro's spokesman, Assistant District Attorney Christopher Bowman, said the grand jury was used to interview witnesses as the office pursued its investigation.
