Pipeline-Safety Group Urges House Measure Cutting Risks
(Updates with comments from Boxer on pipeline agency in seventh paragraph.)
Oct. 18 (Bloomberg) -- The Pipeline Safety Trust urged the U.S. House of Representatives to pass legislation aimed at reducing the risk of explosions and leaks, similar to a measure adopted by the Senate.
The bill approved unanimously by the Senate yesterday would raise civil penalties for violations and call for installing automatic or remote-controlled shut-off valves on new lines. The legislation also requires the Transportation secretary to develop rules for examining previously untested pipelines in populated areas.
Lawmakers introduced the measure after the 2010 rupture of a PG&E Corp. natural-gas pipeline killed eight people in San Bruno, California. The bill gained support when oil from a broken Exxon Mobil Corp. pipe in Montana leaked into the Yellowstone River in July.

(Of course, as any food-safety guru will tell you, it’s best if you have two good, sturdy boards — one for meat and one for everything else.) I'm a fan of wooden cutting boards, which have been shown to be safer than plastic ones when it comes to harboring nasty microbes and are certainly more sustainable. They’re also easier on your knives; marble cutting surfaces, for instance, can dull edges rapidly. Wooden cutting boards are also pricey, so once you buy one, you want to do everything...

Most chefs recommend a food-grade mineral oil, the main ingredient in most commercial "board oil" products. But mineral oil is petroleum based, and who wants to cut their hard-won organic produce on a petroleum-treated cutting board?

4. Just before serving, transfer cooled octopus to a cutting board. Slice off the tentacles and cut across the grain into large bite-size chunks. Quarter the head lengthwise, then cut across the grain into chunks. Salt and pepper the pieces to taste.
